Vaput in English

Vaput, the Oldest Women's Choir in Finnish

Vaput is an amateur female choir in the City of Jyväskylä, Central Finland. The choir is led by music pedagogue Ulla Kotamäki.

Vaput - 115 Years of Singing

Vaput is the oldest still active female choir in Finnish. In particular, Vaput is known for promoting and performing choral music from Central Finland. The choir has been chosen The Finnish Female Choir of the Year three times.

If you live in the Jyväskylä Region and would like to join us, feel free to contact either Hilkka or Ulla, contacts below. We require good singing voice, ability to keep your voice, and ability to sing in Finnish. Ability to read notes helps but in Vaput you learn singing techniques, reading notes etc. with us. The choir practices Tuesday evenings in the Kuokkala Comprehensive School.

Repertoire

The choir's program is versatile. In addition to traditional choral music, our repertoire includes more entertaining and modern choral songs as well as spiritual compositions from different parts of the world.

Vaput takes on new challenges every year. On the other hand, the choir still sings songs that are some of the very first choral works written for female choirs in Finnish.

Concerts and Events

Vaput and the smaller singing groups within it perform actively in various events and concerts. The highlight of the year is the traditional May Day Coffee Concert. You'll find our concerts and events (in Finnish) @vaputlaulaa.
